Why did Felix Verdejo-Sanchez kill his girlfriend?

On Friday November 3, a federal court in Puerto Rico convicted a former Olympic boxer who brutally murdered his pregnant girlfriend and their unborn child. Felix Verdejo-Sanchez, 30, will be incarcerated for the rest of his life, according to a statement from the U.S. Department of Justice. On July 28, a jury found him guilty of killing Keishla Rodriguez Ortiz, 27, and her unborn child after abducting her. Co-defendant Luis Antonio Cadiz-Martinez, 32, pleaded guilty on November 28 to car theft resulting in death and murder of an unborn child. His sentence has not yet been pronounced.

According to the prosecution, on April 29, 2021, Verdejo-Sánchez lured Rodriguez Ortiz into his Dodge Durango. According to Law and Crime, the accused beat the woman, injected her with narcotics, then tied her to a cement block with a wire, while she was two months pregnant. The two defendants then took her to the Teodoro Moscoso bridge, where Rodriguez Ortiz was thrown into the San Jose lagoon by the Puerto Rican boxer, also known as “El Diamante” or “The Diamond”. Later, according to the prosecution, Verdejo-Sanchez entered the lagoon to complete the murder of the victim. Rodriguez Ortiz had been warned by Verdejo-Sanchez not to have children, according to the victim’s mother.

According to reports, Verdejo had been married to Eliz Marie Santiago Sierra for nearly eight years; the couple had a daughter named Miranda.
