The Lovers is a new David Ireland romantic comedy about two very different people who at first clash but inevitably fall for each other.
The two men are political broadcaster Seamus, played by Johnny Flynn, and foul-mouthed grocery clerk Janet, played by Roisin Gallagher.
Frankie, played by Alice Eve, is Seamus’ lover, and Philip, played by Conleth Hill, is Janet’s boss. In the programme, Conleth Hill plays Janet’s boss and Alice Eve plays Seamus’ girlfriend. They both have supporting parts.
When it comes to everything, including her own life, Janet, a feisty, obnoxious clerk in a Belfast grocer, doesn’t give a damn. Seamus, the comedic political broadcaster, on the other hand, seems to be living the good life in London, complete with a famous girlfriend.
But it’s understandable that their first meeting is a bit rocky when Seamus unexpectedly enters Janet’s life by landing in her backyard. They find a strange attraction that defies logic.
At first glance, these people seem to be the complete opposite of everything their mothers warned them about. Drama Republic, in association with Sky Studios, produces The Lovers. David Ireland, an award-winning writer, wrote the screenplay, and Justin Martin, a BAFTA winner, directed.

The plot of the show
The six-part television series The Lovers centers on Janet, a Belfast shopkeeper who doesn’t give a damn about anything, not even her own life. Therefore, she really shouldn’t mind the dashing political broadcaster Seamus when he climbs into her backyard.
He is, after all, arrogant, appears to live the ideal life in London and has a celebrity girlfriend named Frankie. The two are opposites, yet for some reason, they seem irresistibly drawn to each other, demonstrating how love can sometimes appear in the most unexpected places.
Johnny Flynn stars as Seamus O’Hannigan in “The Lovers” and Róisin Gallagher plays Janet Dunlop, the couple’s leading lady.
The Lovers Episode 1 Recap
The Lovers episode 1 was released on Thursday, 7 September 2023. In the first episode of the series, fans will meet Belfast-born supermarket worker Janet, who is unapologetically unapologetic.
He is renowned for his razor-sharp wit and lively vocabulary, yet he shows little interest in anything, not even his own life. At the other end of the range is Seamus, a political broadcaster who is vivacious but also quite narcissistic.
