Why was Emmett Shear appointed CEO of OpenAI?
On November 17, 2023, Sam Altman was abruptly removed from his position as CEO of OpenAI. In a blog post, the company said it was “no longer confident” in his ability to lead the company.
In the following days, attempts were made to bring back the co-founder, but both were unsuccessful.
As a result, Microsoft hired Altman to head its new artificial intelligence division. In response, OpenAI brought in Emmett Shear, the former CEO of Twitch, with the platform’s most famous figure not hesitant to voice his opinion.
Shear clarified his decision to take the OpenAI CEO position in a post on Twitter/X, saying he felt an “obligation to help.”

Last year, with the rise in popularity of streaming services like Kick and YouTube, more loyal Twitch streamers were given the opportunity to voice their opinions on the platform as they now had alternative options to consider.
Ludwig left Twitch for YouTube Gaming before Shire’s departure from the Amazon-owned company in March 2023. The move was prompted by his desire to spend time with his then newborn son.
