Indian music giant to launch T-series ‘Kaala’, its first web original on Disney+ Hotstar

Super Cassettes Industries Private Limited, known in the music industry as T Series, is a music record label company and also a film production company primarily focused on music and entertainment production and based in India. Super Cassettes Industries Pvt Ltd was first established on 11th July 1983 in Delhi by Gulshan Kumar. Currently, T-Series is headquartered in Mumbai, India.

T Series is India’s leading Indian music market music company, with a share of around 35%. Sony Music India is at the second position and Zee Music is at the third position. T-Series holds the title of the most subscribed YouTube channel with around 248 million active members and a total of around 232 billion channel views as of 7 September 2023.

Bhushan Kumar is the owner, acting managing director and chairman of T-Series, with Neeraj Kalyan as the president.

Early on, T-Series’ spotlight two major projects were movies like ‘Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak’, which released in 1988 and sold more than 8 million copies of the album, and Aashiqui, which was released in 1990. and sold a record-breaking 20 million copies and became the best-selling Indian soundtrack album of all time.

Disney+ Hotstar is an Indian OTT platform with active subscription video on-demand streaming services. The over-the-top streaming platform is owned by The Walt Disney Company India, a sister company of parent company Disney Entertainment.

The company initially focused on showing domestic Indian films, sports content and television series for the Indian audience and is currently expanding its content to Southeast Asia. Disney+ Hotstar currently serves India, Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia, and countries such as the UK, Canada and Singapore under the name ‘Hotstar’.

Disney+ Hotstar: A growing customer base and evolution

Disney+ Hotstar has more than 300 million active subscribers as of 2020 records. K Madhavan is the president of Disney+ Hotstar. Disney+ Hotstar was initially launched 8 years ago on 11 February 2015 as Hotstar, but later, on 3 April 2020, the brand name was changed to Disney+ Hotstar.

Recently, Disney Plus Hotstar launched new direct-to-streaming premieres called “Disney+ Hotstar Multiplex”, forcing viewers to watch huge premieres directly on the OTT platform content including movies like ‘The Big Bull’, ‘Khuda Hafeez’, ‘ Sadaq 2’ and many more.

T-Series, a prominent music label, is venturing into OTT content and plans to produce 3-4 long-format web originals a year. Their first web original, “Kaala” is set to premiere on September 15 on Disney+ Hotstar.

Directed by Bejoy Nambiar, the action thriller stars Avinash Tiwari, Rohan Vinod Mehra, Jeetin Gulati, Nivetha Pethuraj and others.

T-Series enters the OTT content arena

Bhushan Kumar, Chairman and Managing Director of T-Series, expressed their ambition to engage with audiences through OTT content, emphasizing their dedication to entertaining a global audience. The company, known for its music and film productions, is expanding its horizons in the OTT space with plans for biopics, book adaptations and collaborations with directors like Hansal Mehta.

Expanding Diverse Genres: Aiming for Global Audiences

T-Series aims to produce content across genres, including comedies, thrillers, biopics and musicals, with a budget of ₹20 crore to ₹100 crore. The company plans to initially shoot in Hindi and later dub the content in multiple languages, aligning with the strategies of the OTT platform.

T-Series journey into web series production

Notably, Disney+ Hotstar is set to exclusively stream “Kaala”, marking T-Series’ entry into web series production. Produced and directed by Bejoy Nambiar, this crime thriller revolves around the criminal masterminds, powers and revenge of an Intelligence Bureau (IB) officer. It will stream on Disney+ Hotstar in India and later on Hulu in the US

T-Series’ venture into web series production and its collaboration with Disney+ Hotstar signal a new chapter for the renowned music label as it explores different storytelling formats and expands its reach to digital audiences.
